Chicken Run!!

This was shot at a traffic intersection on MG Road, one of the most prominent boulevards of Bangalore, India. These chickens are probably headed to either the Empire or Imperial Biryani restaurants. Though not a humane way of transporting these birds to the butcher, it is a common way of transportation.
I shot this through the windshield of my car, so pardon the dusty haze.
Clustered together and hung upside down, most of these birds will have broken feet and wings by now. The birds are frightened, not just because of the way they are hung, but also because of the noisy traffic, the vehicles that come very close to them and the petrol/diesel fumes.Mostly bred in captivity, this probably is the only outing these birds will have, definiltey their last and the dilated pupils probably see that the end is near.

Damn! That is sooo sad! Only pictures like these really make one(me) think about that delicious Basil fried rice with minced chicken(now i have to re-evaluate that just like i don't touch fish after watching Finding Nemo)!Very touching!

and the vegans say this abnormal state of existence will produce toxins in the bodies of the chickens, which then get into our humans through these heaped plates of biryani. perhpas one day the menu cards will say 'all our animals were transported and slaughtered in the most humane way'.

Chay, were you really sad for the chickens?

Like i read somewhere "if god didn't really want us to eat chicken, why did he make them out of meat?"

Lol@motorama and imp.

"The chicken you're eating has been fed, bred and loved to death. So eat it!
With love

Nav..thanks! I know you mean the picture. :-)

Rama...unbelieveable!! You actually gave up fish!!! :-0

Imp...well it is true. The adrenaline in animals subject to trauma before slaughter is higher...its not entirely good for you. Actually I dont understand why live chicken have to transported to the restaurant at all...Its so much more hygienic when it is a centralized system. Slaughtering animals close to the kitchens is always disastrous....especially poultry!

Pradz...I feel sad that the system is so archaic...and unhygienic. I dont have emotions and feelings for animals that are meant for the plate. I am a cruel food loving meat eating butcher...dont you know... :-p

No seriously...my hubbs is veggie enough for the 2 of us!! :-)))))

Whoa - where have I seen these before?

Well, freshly slaughtered chicken (and, supposedly, any other animal) tastes way better than processed, frozen, then thawed stuff. And I'd only term it 'disastrous' when you have a headless chicken running around in the restaurant because of a botched butchering job. Mwahahahhaah!

Seriously, though, I agree, in light of the extra-adrenaline-and-toxins issue, that perhaps a strong case can be made for more humane transfer of animals.

And your veggie hubbs is a wimp! :p
Nahh, seriously ... much respect. I doubt I could give up chicken/fish and the occasional lamb dish ... I'm too weak! My parents just (hmm, over 3 years now) gave up everything but seafood, and are holding out shockingly well!
